Fagus grandifolia Ehrn
Long, elegant, papery buds, opening into thin, dark green, ovate leaves, often remaining on the tree all winter. Distinct light grey bark remains smooth into maturity. Shallow roots require shade and access to ample water supply to thrive. Pyramid shaped nuts, can be pressed into a high grade oil, comparable to olive oil. The critters usually eat them all before they fall from the tree. One of our most beautiful native forest trees.
