Fast growing shade tree that can also be pruned into a thick, functional hedge. Resistant to Dutch Elm disease. Can handle poor soils and desert conditions. The primary species of the Gobi Desert that can handle years with no rain. Unripe seeds were an important survival food during the Great Chinese Famine. All parts of the plant are edible and can be used as a substitute for our native Slippery Elm. In northern climates the leaves turn purple in the fall.
