Can be grown as a bush or small tree, with clean open leafage and bright red edible fruit about the colour and size of ju-jubes. From West Asia and Central Europe where it appears often in folklore. Resists insects and pollution. Its soft-yellow flowers bloom before the leaves open: a welcome sight in early spring.
