Pinus hwangshanensis
Huangshan Pine also known as Yellow Mountain Pine, is a predominant topic of Eastern Chinese art. The distinct shape of old trees with up-curved branchlets reaching to a level top with age, has become a symbol of the Huangshan mountains. These epic trees are able to grow out of rock with negligible amounts of soil on the side of a mountain. We are pushing the zone limits a bit here with them but they have happily overwintered in our nurseries with no extra protection for the last 3 winters so we call them hardy to zone 5 with a prayer and a raised eyebrow.
