Ironwood

Ostrya virginiana 

Ironwood are moody, sculpted, atmospheric and rooted in their location like no other tree. I often get the children to try and shake them when we are in the forest and they won't move even when they are still fairly young. Soft lined bark that peels and curls slightly, subtle but well loved by birds. One of our wonderful native forest species, often used in custom building for structure that feels alive.
